How to read these figures

Useful context before you compare years.

The USGS defines apparent consumption as production plus imports, minus exports, with adjustments for stock change where needed. Its gemstone category includes natural and laboratory-created materials, while the report also distinguishes between them in domestic production.

Values describe the gemstone category as reported by the USGS. They are not retail sales totals for every piece of jewelry sold in the United States, and they should not be used to estimate the value of a specific stone or piece.

Methodology and sources

One primary source, cited consistently.

This page uses the U.S. Geological Survey’s annual Mineral Commodity Summaries, published February 6, 2026. The report is the source for every figure on this page, and its 2025 values are estimates. Figures are reproduced without rounding beyond the report’s published units.
